Makeup Tips for Redheads

Here are some fabulous makeup tips for redheads from celebrity makeup artist Amy Hollier of Luxe Beauty Team at Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in West Hollywood. I'm always thrilled to get more information on how to apply makeup for redheads. We redheads are definitely a unique breed, and I love learning ways to enhance our assets. Check out these tips!

We all know the saying, “Blondes have more fun.” Well, a new phrase is taking over: “Reds are more rad.” Going red is a bold and daring move and with these six steps from celebrity makeup artist Amy Hollier of Luxe Beauty Team at Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon, you can rock the red with the perfect make-up to match your vixen look.

Step 1: Prime Eyelids

To start, use a light brown or copper cream shadow (I used Mac paint pot in "Groundwork") on eyelids and buff out with a fluffy eye shadow brush so nothing is in the crease.

Apply copper/gold shadow to inner half of eyelids closest to the tear ducts. Then apply a bronze/brown shadow to outer half of eyelids. Blend the crease with a clean, fluffy brush.

Step 3: Eyeliner

For a more fashion/editorial look, opt for a dramatic cat eyeliner but in a plummy brown rather than black. It's much more wearable and accents red hair perfectly. Start by lining the lashline, then building the outer corners and extending out and up at the end of the lashline. Check eye to eye for balance. I used Bobbi Browns "Black Plum Ink" gel eyeliner with a pointed liner brush.

Step 4: Eyelashes

Curl, curl and curl. Then apply black mascara to top and bottom lashes. Finish with 2 or 3 individual flares of false lashes on each outer corner.

Step 5: Gorgeous Skin

Wipe away any fallen eye shadow and moisturize entire face. Next apply a sheer foundation or tinted moisturizer (I used Mac Face & Body).

Next apply a little glow to the temples and cheekbones with a liquid or cream bronzer (I used Makeup Forever Uplight#23). Lightly dust the center of the face with translucent powder to set. Add a little soft peachy blush to cheeks (I love Smashbox soft lights tint).

Finish the look with a tinted lip balm. I chose the Clinique Chubby Stick in "Whole Lotta Honey" for it's beautiful golden nude color.

About Luxe Beauty Team

It all started when Luxe co-founders Sarah Uslan and Amy Hollier started a mobile salon based on providing socialites and celebrities with everything from makeup and manicures to tanning and eyebrow shaping. This enterprise has now turned into a full-service tour de force inside the well-known Serge Normant at John Frieda salon located at 8440 Melrose Place in West Hollywood. With a hand picked team of elite stylists, artists and experts, they bring personal, red carpet-worthy attention to clients from Jane Lynch to Denise Richards to Rose McGowan.

Be Ready for That Job Interview With Expert Makeup Tips

This is an article from Anna De Souza, an in-the-know beauty and style reporter. As a beauty junkie and a former career counselor, I can personally vouch for all of these tips. The Skindinavia Makeup Finishing Spray was provided to me for review, and it is remarkable! It helps your makeup to last all day without fading, and it really does give you a smooth finish that takes years off your appearance. I won't be without it from now on. Seriously love it! Here are Anna's tips for a beautiful job interview.

Pound the pavement with the right base. Begin your beauty regime with a primer that fills in fine lines and pores for a flawless finish! Give Smashbox's Photo Finish Foundation Primer a try.  It helps to inhibit the destruction of collagen so you can look flawless for years to come at your corner office.

Sleepless night from nerves? Cover up those under-eye bags, puffiness, or any other perfections with Tarte's Dark Circle Defense. The finely milled light refracting minerals actually brighten skin to help camouflage dark circles, puffiness, refness, fine lines and wrinkles. And there's 56% reduction in eye puffiness after 4 weeks--but we know you'll nail that interview the first go-round!

Sparkle and glitter aren't office appropriate. Opt for a matte shadow in a natural hue on the lids. We love Revlon's ColorStay 12 Hour Eye Shadow in In The Buff. Better yet, go for a thin line of smudged pencil eyeliner. Sue Devitt's Eye Intensifier Pencil is great. Nylon and a number of other ingredients lock in moisture and  expand and contract with facial movements without creasing to create a long-lasting, luminious eye.

Stop fussing with and reapplying your makeup! Ditch the trips to the ladies' and mist on a product that holds concealer, foundation and eyeshadow in place for up to 16 hours. Skindinavia Makeup Finishes creates a flawless look so there's less touch ups throughout the day. Since it resists heat and humidity, the mist is also great for when that mid-interview perspiration occurs!

Now go out there and ace that interview, feeling confident and beautiful!

Simple Makeup Change - Colored Eyeliner

I recently made the simplest change to my makeup routine, and I'm absolutely loving it! At my e.l.f. makeup at home party with my girlfriends, I got to try some fabulous products, colors I wouldn't ordinarily choose. I discovered a new passion - colored eyeliner. I'm a brown eyeliner girl. While I use different shades of brown depnding on the look I'm going for, I rarely strayed from my favorite neutral. Occasionally, I'd use a green liner because I wear a lot of green in my wardrobe, but mostly I stuck with my blah browns. Not anymore.

What a difference a little color makes. I've had so much fun experimenting with different eyeliner colors. One of my favorites is actually e.l.f.'s midnight. It's a dark, navy blue. I pair it with my neutral tan and taupe shadows, and it really pops. The contrast of the liner really accentuates my eyes and makes such a difference in my look, without being over the top. I love it! I'm also having fun with plum eye liner. I think it looks really nice with my red hair. For a neutral shade that's different than my tried and true browns, I like e.l.f.'s ash. It's a pretty light gray color. So different.

Why not give it a try yourself? What an inexpensive, easy way to shake up your makeup routine. Just a change in eyeliner color can brighten your whole face. We could all use a little pick-me-up to chase away the winter blues. Hey, you might even want to try a blue eyeliner! Check out this article for some awesome, in-depth tips on using colored eyeliner.

What do you think? Are you experimental with your eyeliner color or do you stick to your basic brown or black? Do tell.

Makeup By Lauren Luke

I have a new makeup brand to tell you about. The makeup itself is amazing; I just love it. But it's the woman behind the brand that's the real story. I first heard about the By Lauren Luke brand from Tammy at A Mom In Red High Heels. I read a post she did on the makeup with an interview from its creator, Lauren Luke. I was immediately taken with this charming, beautiful woman with the endearing English accent. I was even more impressed as I learned more.

Overnight Sensation

Turns out Lauren is a YoutTube sensation. She had a love of makeup and started putting video tutorials on YouTube, using herself as a model. Before long, she attracted thousands of viewers. In fact, a top talent agent spotted her and immediately signed her. From there, Lauren was able to launch her own makeup line that is sold at her website and at Sephora stores. She was recently featured in Time magazine

The Makeup

The makeup palettes are just wonderful. For only $32.50 you get a compact full of everything you need to put together a gorgeous look. I purchased My Luscious Greens and My Vintage Glams and received free shipping. Can't beat that.  Each palette contains an entire coordinating look of 3 eye shadows, 1 blush, 2 lip glosses, 1 eye liner, and two colors of eye shadow primer. For those of you who haven't used primer, I highly recomend it. In fact I talk about it in a video I did demonstrating a hooded eye look on my MomTV show, Everyday Answers. I love makeup By Lauren Luke. Everything is right there at my fingertips. I appreciate how the colors are already coordinated, and I can just pop the case in my purse for touchups on the go. The palette is a bit larger than your standard compact, but I have a big purse! The ease of application is wonderful, and everything lasts all day long, with only a few touch ups of the lip gloss.

See For Yourself

Visit Lauren's YouTube Channel to see her in action for yourself. I'd recommend buying her makeup as well. It's perfect for moms because it's compact, coordinated, and cost-effective! Gotta love that. I'll be buying more when new colors come out. Lauren told me on Twitter that she will be including some coppers in upcoming lines, which makes me very happy! Visit her on Twitter and Facebook. She's just as personable online as she is in her videos. And she's just another example of the good things that can happen when you put yourself out there!

You all probably know that I'm a makeup junkie. So when e.l.f. had a special for Mother's Day a while back, I jumped on the chance to try their cosmetics. For those of you who aren't aware, e.l.f. stands for eyes, lips, face. Contrary to my husband's belief, they don't sell makeup for elves. Anyway, I have to tell you that I was amazed at what I received for my money. I believe I spent only $8.95 including shipping and got a box full of items.

Not only was I pleased with the price, I was actually very impressed with the quality of the products. As a former beauty consultant for a couple of companies, in addition to the reviews I've been able to do here at Everyday Baby Steps, I've tried a lot of beauty products. And I'm pretty particular when it comes to my cosmetics. I wasn't disappointed with e.l.f.

I found that the products went on smoothly and seemed to last quite well. I'm partial to things that smell yummy, so I fell in love with e.l.f.'s Hyper Shine Gloss in Fairy. It smells like a pina colada, and it's just the right hint of color for casual days. Guess what? I've got a gloss just like it to give to one of you! I've also got the Regular & Waterproof Mascara Duo in Black and a professional eye shadow brush from e.l.f.

All you have to do to win is leave me a comment telling me your must-have cosmetic item is. Mine is lip gloss because I have such pale lips that I've gotta have some kind of color. This part is required for entry, and all entries must be received by July 12th at noon EST. Winner will be notified by e-mail. You can earn extra entries by:

1. Grabbing our cute Summer Soiree button and posting it prominently on your blog.

2. Subscribing to my blog, either by RSS or email.

3. Add yourself to my followers in the sidebar.

5. Stumble this post.

6. Tweet this giveaway, including @marybabysteps in your tweet.

My Picks From the 22 Best Sephora Beauty Buys

Where do you buy your makeup? I must confess I'm a catalog or beauty counter girl, but I think I'm missing out on a prime shopping experience. I've heard of Sephora for years but just recently began shopping the site. Sephora has the best of the best brands, and I do a lot of shopping online anyway. What a convenient way to feed my addiction get my makeup and beauty supplies. What I also like about Sephora is that they have a rating system and reviews you can read before deciding to make a purchase, which is fabulous for moms on a budget.

What really got me to snooping around Sephora was an article I read on TotalBeauty.com listing the 22 Best Sephora Beauty Buys. (Don't even get me started on how much I love TotalBeauty - I'll save that for another post!) The list includes so many amazing products, each with a rating and review from a TotalBeauty.com reader. I'd like to try all 22 of them (Wouldn't we all?), but here's a list of the five I think would be most essential for busy moms.

NARS Blush

I chose NARS Blush because blush is such a key item in a makeup regimen. A good blush adds glow and color to a woman's face and can make a dramatic difference in the skin's overall appearance. I was also influenced by the written review which said that a little goes a long way. I always want to get a good value for my money. I think I'll try the reader's shade choice of "Orgasm". I've read that it's absolutely amazing, and, really, I kinda just like the name!

Sephora Kohl Pencil

I'd recommend buying this eye pencil because it's economical, and eyeliner is definitely a must-have makeup item. Remember that Bobbi Brown says pencil liners are fastest as well, perfect for moms on the go. The reader review says this eyeliner is easy to apply and goes on smooth. Sounds like a winner to me.

Demeter Fragrance Library Hawaiin Surf Cologne

Summer's coming, and it's definitely time for a new, lighter fragrance. I think every woman should treat herself to a signature scent all her own. It really makes a difference to my mood to be able to treat myself like this, and a great smell really does wonders to lift my mood, my energy, and my spirts on frazzled days with the kids. The reviewer says this cologne smells like you're at the beach, but it's not heavy. I certainly can't afford a trip to the beach this year, but I think even I can afford the $20 for this little luxury!

Philosophy Purity Made Simple

A good cleanser is essential. Skin that's healthy sets the stage for your makeup. If your skin doesn't look good, it doesn't matter what brand of cosmetics you use - you simply won't look your best. I've used Philosophy products in the past and have just loved them. I wouldn't hesitate to try anything from the Philosophy line, and this cleanser looks just right for my combination skin.

Shiseido The Makeup Accentuating Color Stick

I so want to try this color stick! Yes, I know I already listed a blush, but stick blushes are actually my very favorite for their ease and precision of application. And this product can also be used on eyes and lips. You all know how I feel about multitasking products! This one seems a bit pricey for my budget, but I'd be willing to pay the price for something that does it all. I've learned that a multipurpose product can really save you on busy mornings.

There you have it, my picks for the must-have products for moms. This is in no way an advertorial for Sephora or for any of the products mentioned. I really enjoyed my time browsing the Sephora site and wanted to show you which kinds of cosmetic products, based on my experience, are worth spending the money on. Have you tried any of these brands? What do you recommend? I'd love to hear your suggestions!

Makeup For Mommies

My newest makeup discovery is Mommy Makeup, and I sure wish I'd discovered it 10 years ago with my first child! Mommy Makeup is a company that develops beauty products with moms in mind. Many of the products are multipurpose, and the colors seem to work for nearly everyone. Their tagline is "Look Divine in Half the Time". I love that!

The company founder, Debra Rubin-Roberts, says, "When I first became a mom I barely had enough time to brush my teeth, let alone put on my makeup." So many moms feel the same way, which is why she created her multi-tasking, worry-free makeup. There are so many products that looked worth giving a whirl. The Mineral Dual Powder looks like an incredible foundation because it's pressed, not loose, so no mess. I also thought the Barely Blushing Lip & Cheek Tint looks like a really great option for moms as well. What I ultimately chose to try out was Mommy Makeup's Any Wear Creme, in twinkle.

Twinkle is a pinky beige color with a bit of shimmer. I really like the look of it; it's like nothing else I have. Any Wear Creme is a 3-in-1 product. How cool is that? It can be used on lips, cheeks, and eyes. That's what I call multi-tasking! Here's a look at my results.

First of all, I really can't say enough about the color. I just love it. The pictures probably don't do it justice. It's so pretty and pops in a really sublte way. I used it on my lids, cheeks, and lips. Any Wear Creme goes on so smoothly. And it lasts! I have to admit that I added clear lipgloss on top of the creme because I prefer a glossy finish to a matte one, but I didn't need to reapply for hours. It's that good. I absolutely adore the speed at which I can get ready using this product. I simply did my prep work with concealer, highlighter, and foundation. Then I added the Any Wear Creme to the desired areas. I applied it using my fingers and blended with a sponge. Finally, a bit of eye liner and mascara, and I was done. I used green eye liner, compliments of Bobbi Brown's tip.

I recommend taking a look at the Mommy Makeup website. They offer kits to make it even easier, and the prices are pretty good. The product seems to go a long way. Check it out today and let me know what you think.

Keep Your Lipstick On!

I used to hate lipstick.  What a waste of money!  I'd put it on, and it looked great. . . for about a minute, five tops.  Then my poor lips would be pale and pitiful all over again.  But I've finally learned a way to make it stay.  From Mary Kay.  Yes, I'm a poet. . .

Anyway, back to my life-altering makeup tip.  The secret is in the lip liner and what you do with it.  Don't, I repeat, do not draw the thick line around the edge of your lips or, even worse, outside your natural lip line to make your lips seem fuller!  Yuck.  Not natural, not pretty.  Instead, use the liner to fill in your entire lip, acting as a base for your lipstick to adhere to.  It's like foundation, for your lips!

Once your lip liner's in place, apply a complementary color of lipstick.  First, put lipstick on the upper lip, from the middle to the outer edge.  Then the other side.  Next, sweep the color on your lower lip from one side to the other.  A light application should be sufficient.  Finally, if you'd like a bit of shine, add lip gloss - either clear or even a coordinating shade.

Don't be afraid to play with color.  Adding the lip liner base is not only practical for maintaining your lipstick's staying power, but it also adds a little variety to your daily lip color.  Mix it up a bit, try these tips, and you'll be loving lipstick again, too!

Shake Up Your Makeup Routine!

Busy women often get stuck in a beauty rut.  With kids, work, and household obligations, it's easy to get so caught up in the chaos of everyday life that you forget to take time for yourself.  You're probably thinking, "What time?  There IS no time for myself!"  You'd be surprised what a few quick changes can do for your mood.

How many of us have had the same makeup routine for as long as we can remember?  Until recently, I was a tried and true neutral girl, sticking with all shades of brown.  Boring!  I decided to experiment with some new accent colors, like plum and olive green, and was very pleased with the outcome.  For little money and practically no time commitment, I made a change that made me feel good about myself and provided a pick-me-up to my everyday mommy routine.  You can check out Mary Kay's website here for suggestions on shades to choose based on your eye color.  You'll also find application tips for your eye shape.  Just changing the way you apply your current color can have a dramatic effect.

What if you don't wear makeup regularly?  That's fine, but consider your skin care routine.  Simply adding a daily moisturizer with SPF can improve the appearance of your skin and fight aging.  Think about adding foundation.  Many people don't know that foundation can protect your face from the elements as well as add a smoother, more even appearance to your skin tone.  Today's new mineral foundations are light and go on without the heavy feeling of traditional ones.  Check out what Carmindy, the well-known makeup artist from TLC's "What Not To Wear" has to say about prepping your face for makeup and creating radiant skin.

Carmindy also offers some suggestions for changing your look for different occasions.  But why not use some of her ideas for everyday to "shakeup your makeup" regimen?  Decide that today's the day to play with a deep lipstick to contrast pale eyes or go for bronzed skin and coral lips on a hot, steamy day.  The possibilities are endless.
